Budget Stress
Teacher Centers in NY State are still facing tumultuous times concerning the state budget and we thank all of you who have gone to the NYSUT website to fax your legislators regarding continuation of funding for Teacher Centers! If you have not done so, please do so today! http://www.nysut.org and follow the directions there.

Many of you participated in our 2-question Really Quick Survey about how our Rockland Teachers’ Center Institute had influenced your teaching or leadership. (If not, it's not too late! Go to:

We love looking through these responses and have sent many examples to our Legislators. And this has given us ideas for expanded programs and services. Thanks!

Connecting Health with Learning: A Bridge to Wellness and Achievement

Right now, in March and April, there are 2 courses running which are part of the Certificate in Connecting Health with Learning, a result of our participation in a 5-year 'Steps to a Healthier NY' grant in collaboration with the Rockland County Department of Health and many of Rockland's school districts. For information on how you might engage in the Certificate coursework, download this flyer below.

Since 2003, over 150 public and private school teachers, grades K-12, have learned to use physical activity in their lesson plans to support healthy brain development and student achievement. Through this central professional development course, Learning in Motion, teachers employ best practices to increase movement and improve student learning. In an expansion of this program, other courses include Yoga in the Classroom, the Power of Food, Developing Gang-Resistant Youth, Differentiated Learning, and Grantwriting for Educators to become part of a 9-credit graduate Certificate program through partnering with the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

School Health Symposium Date Set
In addition, School Health Advisory Councils, district leaders and educators, food service representatives, parent advocacy groups, and other county agencies have joined to respond to health issues in a coordinated way. Coming up soon is the annual School Health Symposium, set for April 30, 4-7 pm. Speakers, workshops and opportunities for networking to learn more about how to work together for the health and wellness of the young people of Rockland will be topics of interest! We'll have more information on our www.rockteach.org website soon!
